Best fiction book you've read this summer?

For me, so far, it's Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach.

Don't know yet, but I'm hoping it'll be Lydia Davis's Varieties of Disturbance which I've been hoarding until I have time off.

"Falling Man" by Don DeLillo. McEwan is on my list along with Michael Ondaatje's "Divisadero."

I'm in the middle of the On Chesil Beach audiobook right now and am enthralled. McEwan reads it himself and he's really quite a good narrator. This is the most recent book to be passed around by the staff at my library.

Ron & Pamela--both books on my list.

Collin--I had a hard time with Falling Man. Maybe because I'd recently read Ken Kalfus's A Disorder Peculiar to the Country--another novel dealing with the aftermath of 9/11 and a dissolving marriage. Part of me wanted to kiss McEwan's feet simply because On Chesil Beach had nothing to do with 9/11, was even set decades before it...which is unfair, I guess. And McEwan probably worked out a little of that 9/11 stuff in Saturday. I did love where the DeLillo novel's title came from, though...

Amy--I have the audiobook on hold so I can hear it, too! [grin]

Laurel--one of my favorites. I read it every few years. Pretty wonderful, eh?

I loved Middlesex which I just finished and am almost through with Proulx' That Old Ace In The Hole which is wonderful and funny and dense and full of really great words.

Larry Doyle's I Love You, Beth Cooper made me laugh. But the best thing I've read all summer is not fiction but a memoir, Julia Child's My Life in France. And I loved Kenneth Koch's collection of poetry comics, The Art of the Possible.
